Best Neighbourhoods to Stay In

Where you stay shapes your entire Singapore experience. The good news: Singapore's MRT is so good that no major tourist neighbourhood is more than 40 minutes from any other. Here's the honest breakdown of each area.

🌊

Marina Bay / CBD

Best for: First-timers, special occasions, iconic views. Walking distance to MBS, Gardens by the Bay, Merlion. Very safe, very central. Limited budget options, mostly 4-star and above.

S$200–600/night
🛍️

Orchard Road

Best for: Shoppers, business travellers, families. Singapore's main retail strip with every mall imaginable. Excellent MRT access. Fewer budget options but good mid-range choice.

S$120–400/night
🌿

Bugis / Bras Basah

Best for: Cultural explorers, budget-to-mid travellers. Near Arab Street, Haji Lane, National Museum. Great MRT access. One of the best-value areas with lots of options.

S$60–200/night
🏮

Chinatown

Best for: Budget travellers, street food lovers, backpackers. Cheapest food in the city, best hawker centres. Many hostels and budget hotels. MRT (NE + DT lines) nearby.

S$30–150/night
🕌

Little India

Best for: Budget travellers, those seeking local flavour. Great food (Indian, Malay), colorful streets, Mustafa Centre. Mustang hostels here among Singapore's best value.

S$30–120/night
🏖️

Sentosa Island

Best for: Families with kids, resort-style stays, USS visitors. Beautiful but isolated, expensive taxis to get off the island. Best if you're spending most time on Sentosa itself.

S$180–600/night
Best overall neighbourhood for first-timers: Bugis or City Hall/Raffles Place area. Central, great MRT access, walkable to Chinatown and Marina Bay, and good spread of hotel prices from S$80 to S$400/night.

Common Hotel Questions

Is Marina Bay Sands worth the price?

That depends entirely on whether the infinity pool matters to you. The MBS infinity pool, perched 57 floors above the city with a view of the skyline, is one of the great hotel experiences in the world. Non-guests cannot access the pool. Only hotel guests staying in a room can use it. If you want that experience, staying one or two nights at MBS is worth every dollar. For everything else, casino, restaurants, Shoppes, SkyPark observation deck, you don't need to stay there.

MBS pool access tip: If budget is a concern, book a one-night stay in the cheapest MBS room (from S$450–550) on a day when you're doing activities nearby. Even one morning at the infinity pool at dawn is a bucket-list experience. The non-hotel SkyPark observation deck (S$32) is a consolation prize — nice view but no pool.

Is Sentosa a good base?

Only if you're spending most of your time on Sentosa itself, i.e. you're visiting Universal Studios, spending beach days, or staying at Resorts World Sentosa's casino. Sentosa is lovely but requires a taxi (S$6–10 Sentosa surcharge) or Sentosa Express every time you go to the main island. For city sightseeing, you're better based in the city and making Sentosa a day trip.

Which area is best for families?

Orchard Road or Marina Bay for families. Orchard has ION, Takashimaya, Orchard Central and other malls with kids' play areas and accessible everything. Marina Bay puts you near Gardens by the Bay (kids love the Supertrees and Cloud Forest), and the ArtScience Museum. Both areas have excellent transport. Sentosa is another good family base if you plan multiple days at USS and the beach.

What about Airbnb in Singapore?

Airbnb's short-term rental situation in Singapore is legally complex. As of 2026, renting private residential properties for less than 3 months requires approval from the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), most private landlords listing on Airbnb for less than 3 months are operating illegally. You can technically book but you and the host take legal risk. Staying in licensed hotels, hostels, or serviced apartments is always the safer option. Some serviced apartment buildings are licensed for short stays and do appear on Airbnb, look for properties with "serviced apartment" in the name and check for URA approval.

When should I book?

Understanding Hotel Bills: GST & Service Charge

Singapore hotel rates are commonly quoted in three different ways. Understanding which you're looking at prevents nasty surprises at checkout:

Price formatWhat it meansExample: S$200 room
S$200 nettAll-inclusive, final price — nothing addedYou pay S$200
S$200 (inclusive)Same as "nett" — taxes included in display priceYou pay S$200
S$200++Add 10% service charge + 9% GST (19% total)You pay S$238
S$200 + taxesUsually means ++ (19% on top)You pay S$238
Watch for "per room per night" ++ pricing: Booking.com and most platforms now show total prices inclusive of all taxes — but hotel direct websites and some older booking systems still show ++ rates. A hotel advertising "from S$180++" is actually charging you S$214.20 per night. Always confirm the total inclusive price before completing your booking. You cannot claim a GST refund on hotel stays — the Tourist Refund Scheme only applies to retail good
