Why Changi Is Different
Changi Airport (IATA: SIN) consistently wins the title of world's best airport, and it earns it. Unlike most airports, which are purely functional, Changi is a destination in its own right. You have butterfly gardens, swimming pools, movie theatres, rooftop walking trails, and the jaw-dropping Jewel complex all within the airport perimeter. Even a 2-hour layover can be genuinely enjoyable.
But beyond the wow factor, Changi is exceptionally practical. Immigration queues move fast, the MRT is a 5-minute walk from arrivals, and every sign is in clear English. For most visitors, arrival in Singapore is one of the smoothest airport experiences in the world.
Terminal Guide
Changi has four operational terminals (T1, T2, T3, T4) plus the connected Jewel complex. T1, T2, and T3 are linked by the free Skytrain and are within walking distance of each other. T4 is a separate building connected by a free shuttle bus (approx. 10 minutes).

| T1 | Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Qantas, Thai Airways, Turkish, AirAsia X | Yes | Walk 5 min | Direct connection via T1 basement |

Terminal 5 (Coming Soon)
Changi is building Terminal 5, which will eventually double the airport's capacity when completed. As of 2026, construction is ongoing and T5 is not yet operational. Your travel won't be affected.
Jewel Changi Airport
Jewel is a 135,700 sqm mixed-use complex built directly between Terminal 1 and the public area of the airport. It is accessible to all passengers, arriving, departing, transiting, AND members of the public who haven't flown at all. You don't need a plane ticket to visit Jewel.

Arrival Step-by-Step
Before You Land: SG Arrival Card
All international visitors must complete the Singapore Arrival Card (SGAC) before arriving. It is free, takes 2 minutes, and must be submitted within 3 days of arrival. Go to eservices.ica.gov.sg or use the MyICA mobile app. You will receive a confirmation email, screenshot it. You do not print or show anything; immigration can access it electronically.
At Immigration
Changi's immigration uses automated lanes for most passport types. Citizens and permanent residents of Singapore, plus many visitors from developed countries (including US, UK, EU, Australia, Japan, South Korea, etc.) can use automated lanes, just scan your passport at the kiosk. The process takes under 2 minutes per person. Manual queues exist for those who need them or prefer them.
- Fingerprints: First-time visitors may be asked to register fingerprints and take a photo at an automated lane.
- Customs: After collecting luggage, pass through customs. Green channel (nothing to declare) or Red channel (items to declare). Singapore has strict rules on duty-free alcohol limits (1 litre of spirits, 1 litre of wine or beer), tobacco (no duty-free — all tobacco is taxable in Singapore since 2014), and prohibited items.
- Prohibited items: Chewing gum (not for sale in Singapore), firecrackers, certain knives, drugs. Penalties are severe.
After Immigration: Your First Steps
- Get a SIM card — kiosks for Singtel, StarHub, and M1 are in the arrival hall. Tourist SIMs from S$15 for 7 days unlimited data. Much cheaper than roaming.
- Get cash (if needed) — ATMs are available at all terminals. Exchange rate at the airport is worse than in town (Mustafa Centre in Little India gives the best rates). Get S$50–100 for your first day, then exchange more in town.
- Get transport — MRT or Grab (see above). Do not exchange large amounts of cash at the airport.
Transit & Layovers
Do I Need a Visa to Transit?
This depends on your nationality and whether you remain airside (in the transit area, before immigration) or plan to leave the airport.
| Scenario | Visa Required? |
|---|---|
| Airside transit — staying in the departure/transit area only | No visa for most nationalities |
| Leaving the airport (going into Singapore city) | Depends on nationality — most Western passport holders do NOT need a visa for up to 30–90 days |
| Indian passport holders transiting | Check ICA website — transit visa may be needed if you need to switch terminals and pass through immigration |
| Pakistani, Afghan, and a few other nationalities | May need a transit visa even airside — check ica.gov.sg |

Departure Tips
How Early Should You Arrive?
- Long-haul international flights: Arrive 3 hours before departure
- Short-haul regional flights (under 4 hours): 2 hours before is usually fine
- Budget airlines (Scoot, AirAsia): Check-in counters close 60 minutes before — be there early
- Peak times: Add 30 minutes on public holidays, school holidays, and Friday evenings
FAST & Automated Check-In
Singapore Airlines, Scoot, and several other carriers offer self check-in kiosks at the airport, plus bag drop facilities. T2 and T3 also have Bag Drop City facilities in certain city hotels, where you can check in your luggage up to 1 day before your flight and travel to the airport unburdened.
Duty Free & Shopping Before You Fly
Singapore's airport duty-free is extensive and genuinely good value, particularly for:
- Alcohol: Duty-free Scotch, gin, and wine are significantly cheaper than city prices. Buy on departure (not arrival — Singapore taxes all alcohol brought in).
- Cosmetics & skincare: Wide range with GST (9%) already excluded for departing passengers.
- Local snacks: Bengawan Solo (pandan kaya cake), Bak Kwa (pork jerky), TWG tea — all popular gifts.
Frequently Asked Questions
For most visitors from Western countries using automated lanes, immigration takes 5–15 minutes. During peak arrival times (midday and early evening), it can stretch to 30 minutes at manual counters. Changi is consistently one of the fastest airports in Asia for immigration processing. Complete your SG Arrival Card online before landing to avoid filling out forms on arrival.
Yes, MRT carriages have space for luggage near the doors. The route from Changi to most hotels involves 1–2 interchanges (train changes), which means navigating escalators and lifts with your bags. Lifts are available at all stations. If you have more than 2 large suitcases or are travelling with young children, Grab is much more practical. MRT is perfectly fine for 1–2 bags per person.
No ticket needed to enter Jewel. It is open to the general public, you don't need a flight or any travel document. The only paid area is Canopy Park on the top floor (from S$16). Everything else, the Rain Vortex, Forest Valley, all shopping and dining, is free to access. Jewel is open 24 hours for retail, though individual shops/restaurants have their own hours (most from 10am–10pm).
Yes, the SG Arrival Card (SGAC) is mandatory for all international visitors. It replaces the old paper disembarkation card. Submit it for free at eservices.ica.gov.sg or via the MyICA app within 3 days before you land. You'll get a confirmation email. There's nothing to print, immigration systems are linked electronically. The whole process takes about 2 minutes. Warning: many unofficial sites charge fees for this, it is always free on the official ICA website.
Get just S$50–100 at the airport for your first day (taxi/Grab deposit, small purchases). Exchange rates at the airport are inferior to money changers in the city, especially at Mustafa Centre (Little India), Lucky Plaza (Orchard Road), or The Arcade (Raffles Place). Most places in Singapore accept card payments, and Grab doesn't require cash. ATMs at Changi dispense Singapore dollars and the rate is reasonable (better than bureau de change counters).
The MRT stops around 11:15pm–midnight. For late arrivals (after 11pm), your options are: (1) Grab, available 24/7, S$20–35 to the city; (2) Taxi, 24/7 from taxi stands, add 50% midnight surcharge between midnight–6am; (3) NITE OWL bus, routes 960, 969 run through the night but are slow and limited. Grab is the recommended option for most late-night arrivals.
Yes, for most nationalities. If your passport is from a visa-exempt country (US, UK, EU, Australia, etc.) and you have enough time, you can clear immigration, explore Singapore, then return to the airport for your connecting flight. Allow at least 2 hours to return, clear departure security, and reach your gate. Many countries require a transit visa even to remain airside, check ica.gov.sg for your specific nationality.
The airport is the most convenient place. Singtel, StarHub, and M1 kiosks are open in all arrivals halls. Typical tourist SIM prices (2026):
- 7-day unlimited data: S$15–18
- 14-day unlimited data: S$25–30
- 30-day plan: S$30–45
All three carriers have good coverage throughout Singapore. Singtel is generally considered best for network quality. You can also buy SIMs at 7-Eleven, convenience stores, and official telco shops in the city, often cheaper than the airport kiosks.
T4 is not directly connected to the Skytrain network or Jewel. To get to Jewel or the MRT from T4: take the free inter-terminal shuttle bus from T4 to T2 or T3 (runs every 10 minutes, journey ~10 minutes). From T2 or T3, walk to the MRT or to the Jewel connector. Total time: 20–25 minutes. The shuttle bus stop is clearly signed in T4 arrivals.
Yes, the Changi Airport Shuttle bus (operated by Maxicab / GO Airport Transfer and others) stops at major hotels in the city centre. It costs approximately S$9–10 per person, which is cheaper than a private taxi or Grab but slower (shared, stops at multiple hotels). Book at the shuttle counters in the arrival halls. Not all hotels are covered, check at the counter. For families or groups, Grab usually works out comparable in price and is much faster.
